Bio

Jim Geller has published over 150 journal and conference papers and 12 book chapters about subjects that include Medical Informatics, Semantic Web technology, Object-Oriented Database modeling, and Knowledge Representation. Between 2006 and 2012, Dr. Geller was co-principal investigator on federal grants (totaling over $2.5 million) about auditing methods, abstraction algorithms, and software tools for important medical terminology systems, such as the Unified Medical Language System (UMLS) and the Systematized Nomenclature of Medicine — Clinical Terms (SNOMED CT).

Dr. Geller is a Fellow of the prestigious American College of Medical Informatics (ACMI). In 2010 he received the NJIT Excellence in Research Award. He has received four notable teaching awards from NJIT, including the Master Teacher Designation in 2005 and the NJIT award for Professional Development in Teaching in 2011. The latter was for his work introducing Medical Informatics as a teaching subject in the Computer Science Department curriculum.

Earlier in his career, Dr. Geller was the co-founder of the Structural Analysis of Biomedical Ontologies Center (SABOC) and founder of the Semantic Web Laboratory, both located in the Computer Science Department. Dr. Geller received his Ph.D. from the State University of New York at Buffalo in 1988 for his work in Artificial Intelligence.
